Hey, Y'all!
I'm back again on the blog today with this birthday card that was SO much fun to create!
Once March hits, we have at least one family birthday every month until September, so the 2nd half of the year is always a drain on my birthday card stash. Creating quick and easy backgrounds like this is a life saver when you need a fast card in a pinch!
I began by taking some watercolor cardstock and taping it to my work surface with painter's tape. A quick note about using painter's tape: Before you stick the tape to your paper and adhere it to your work surface, it's helpful if you stick the tape to your arm and pull it off, just to remove some of the stick. Doing this will ensure that your cardstock doesn't tear when you are finished with your watercolor or ink blending and go to remove the painter's tape.
I then chose three different Distress Oxide inks and smooshed them on to a plastic sandwich bag. I actually picked up this technique from watching a video that Kristina Werner did on Distress Oxide Inks. (Find her video here). I used a water bottle sprayer to mist the inks on the sandwich bag, and then I picked up the sandwich bag and smooshed the ink onto my watercolor paper. I turned the bag around in different directions to get a varied look with the colors. I used Broken China, Worn Lipstick, and Fossilized Amber, so I was able to get additional green, orange, and purple hues because of the colors mixing! The key to making the magic happen with these inks is to just be patient! Continue to spray them with water while working your heart tool over the paper at the same time. When it's totally dry, take the inked sandwich bag back to the paper and add another layer of ink smooshing, and then repeat the process of misting the paper with water and then drying it with a heat tool.
Once I was happy with the end result of my background, I set out to adding the birthday decorations!
I die cut an oval frame out of gray kraft cardstock using the Avery Elle Sweet Scallops die set and also die cut a coordinating piece of vellum using one of the same dies from this set. I used the cake image from the Avery Elle Time to Party stamp set and stamped it on the vellum in Versamark ink, and then heat embossed the image to create a darker contrast to the colorful background.
I used the same shades of Distress Markers that I used in the oxide inks for the background to color in the cake image. I then glued the frame and coordinating oval piece onto the colorful background and used a Hickory Smoke distress marker to darken the edges of the frame so that it would stand out against the background. I also used the Lawn Fawn Large Stitched Rectangle Stackables die to add some interest to my gray kraft card base. I then trimmed down my card panel a little bit and glued it on to my card base to finish everything off.
I love this stamp set because it is SO versatile and you can easily personalize it for anyone!
Thanks for stopping by today, and here's hoping your Saturday includes some crafty time!
