One of the most unfair things in the world is how Mother's Day seems to literally creep up on me every.single.year.
Considering how much my own mother means to me and how underappreciated moms are in general, I'd say it's pretty much criminal to let the day get shoved to the dark corners of our minds. My sweet sister seems to come through for all of us every year and always manages to think of something so appropriate and wonderful for us to do for Mom. This year she had a little help from my brother in law, which was extra special!
If I'm needing to create something beautiful enough to give to a mother, the stamp set of choice is clearly the WPlus9 Freehand Florals stamp set. I think I own almost every floral set that Dawn has produced. They are so lovely and so easy to customize for any type of project!
I stamped my blue floral images on white cardstock using Hero Arts Bold Summer Sky hybrid ink. Because blue was the primary color, I wanted to choose a complimentary color that would soften the bright blue, and yellow was definitely the obvious choice! I finished it off by choosing a nice shade of subtle green for the leaves.
I love how versatile this stamp set is! For this particular card, I used the base image and then one of the detail images for all the flowers and the larger leaves. I am by no means an expert, but I've found that when doing floral arrangements, using only the base images on some of the leaves and filler greenery helps to break up the overall image and give it a good amount of variety.
Now, here's where it gets good, you guys! If you don't have a lot of different ink colors, you can still use all those layering stamp sets on the market by incorporating white pigment ink! I love using this technique because it takes all the guess work out of choosing the right shades of ink for a cohesive image. I stamped the base images in the blue, yellow, and green inks, and then heat set those just to ensure there was no excess ink that might blend into the next ink layering step. I then stamped over the original images with my white pigment ink, and dabbed any of the excess ink off with a cloth. After my panel was nice and dry, I stamped the layering images on my flowers in the exact same color of ink as the base image. But because there was now a layer of white pigment ink that lightened up the base image, the layering image shows up nice and dark, and it looks like two different ink colors. This is a no-brainer way to stretch your inks when you can's stretch the craft budget to buy more inks! After I stamped all my layering images on the flowers, I dabbed the panel one more time with a dry cloth to dab any excess ink away.
I die cut my panel with the Avery Elle Postage Stamp die to give that decorative edge around the card base. I glued the postage stamp frame piece on to my card base and then adhered the coordinating rectangle piece into place. I used one of the sentiments from the WPlus9 Strictly Sentiments 4 set and stamped it in my favorite black ink to finish off the card.
I am so thankful for my own mother who worked full time and still made us feel like we were the only thing in her world that mattered. She worked all day long, and then came home and worked all evening long. Only to fall into bed and start it all over again the next day. She is truly an angel!
I'm also very grateful for an amazing mother-in-law who is more of a friend than anything else. And of course, I adore her all the more for raising such a wonderful son. I feel as though my mother-in-law and I have always been family--and that is a truly special thing.
